What does it mean to invest in a Lincoln, and what makes us the best choice to handle all your Lincoln needs?
The Lincoln Legacy
Lincoln is synonymous with luxury in America and has been since 1917 when Henry M. Leland founded this automotive company. By then, Leland was a key player in the American automotive landscape, co-founding Cadillac in 1902 and managing the company with his son, Wilfred, for the next decade. By 1917, Leland resigned from Cadillac and opened the Lincoln Motor Company with plans to secure a contract producing Liberty aircraft engines to aid the war efforts.
Leland secured the $10 million contract, which paid for the Lincoln Motor Company Plant in Detroit. By the end of World War I, the plant assembled 6,500 Liberty V12 engines and then turned its attention to automobiles. In 1920, the Model L debuted as Lincoln's first automobile, but slow production wreaked havoc and led to financial turmoil for the company before it ever had the chance to get off the ground. Even then, Leland refused to give up; the company was placed in receivership and faced bankruptcy.
Although Leland's company was in trouble, Edsel Ford of the Ford Motor Company recognized Lincoln's potential as a luxury automotive brand. Edsel persuaded his father, Henry, to purchase the Lincoln Motor Company, valued at $16 million. Ford made the only bid at $5 million, with the court ordering a total purchase price of $8 million. That investment has paid off tenfold as the Ford Motor Company established Lincoln as its luxury brand.
The Premier Lincoln Culture
Henry Leland's legacy teaches a valuable lesson of persistence and perseverance. Leland refused to give up when General Motors' president, William Durant, wouldn't let Cadillac assist in production to aid the troops in World War I. Leland saw potential when Durant couldn't, which led to his forming the Lincoln Motor Company. Even with the company later facing bankruptcy, Leland's perseverance paid off as the Ford Motor Company took the reins and adopted Lincoln as its luxury line-the leading luxury brand in America's automotive landscape.
